Google And Duplicate Content by Richard Lowe

I've been following the discussion about Google and mirrored
information for some time. It is "common knowledge" that Google
penalizes page rank when it determines that content is
duplicated somewhere else. In fact, I've read many experts
stating that there should be no duplicate domain names and no
duplicate content anywhere.

On the face of it the arguments appear to be sound. Google
obviously has several billion pages in it's database and could,
it appears, easily determine if content is duplicated. It also
seems, again on the face of it, that it's reasonable to check
for duplicate content, as this is the "mark of a spammer" and
not necessary on the web with hyperlinking available. At least,
this is the common wisdom.

However, sometimes what seems reasonable and possible is not:
not by a long shot.

Let's begin with the technical side of things. You've got
domain x and domain y with exactly the same content. How on
earth would Google be able to figure that out? Let's say Google
had 3 billion pages in it's database. To compare every page to
every page would be an enormous task - quadrillions of
comparisons.

Now, if site x had page "page1" which linked to site y which
also had "page1", then it would be possible for Google to
determine the duplicate content. Conceivably, it could check
this out.

Not only is the task enormous, but the benefit is so tiny as to
be insignificant. Duplicate content does not imply in any way
shape or form spamming. In actual fact, a duplicate site is
generally going to lower page rank of BOTH sites. Instead of
having 100 links to one site, there will presumably be 50 links
to one and 50 to another. This would tend (all things being
equal) to lower the page ranking of both sites. So Google gains
nothing by this incredible expenditure of resources.

There are several reasons for duplicate content which have
nothing to do with spamming. Sometimes the content is actually
duplicated, and sometimes it's just that there are several
different domains (at least the www and non-www versions) for
the same website

Mirroring a site for load balancing - This is very common. The
purpose is to split up the traffic between two copies of the
site.

Mirroring for region - Sometimes site mirroring is done simply
to make it more efficient on the internet backbone itself. You
might put an identical copy of a site in Europe, for example,
to reduce traffic across the Atlantic, which should make it
faster in European countries.

Viral marketing - It's extremely common to allow other sites to
republish articles in return for a link.

Different domain names - Sometimes a site might be referenced
on many different domain names. You might want to allow the
.com,.net and.org versions of the name to all work the same,
you might allow for common misspellings or you might cover
different keywords (sewing-tips and sewing-secrets are examples
of possible combinations).

Different domain names for different markets - you might also
want to reference your site by different names in order to
target different markets. You could, for example, have a site
about search engine optimization and want to target both SEO
and web designers. Thus domain names like seo.com and
webdesign.com would make sense.

www - Any good webmaster knows his or her site needs to be
referenced with and without the www.

Okay, so what's the smart thing to do? Well, it is possible
that search engines do compare a limited number of pages to
check for duplication. They could certainly check if someone
reported something, and they might check directly linked pages
(although this is still a heck of a lot of overhead for very
little benefit).

Of course, Google and the other search engines can account for
a hefty percentage of the traffic received by a site. In fact,
sometimes the number can exceed 70 percent. So it's wise to
spend some time ensuring that you are totally clean when it
comes to search engine optimization. In other words, a
technician from any search engine should be able to examine
your site down to it's smallest detail and find no evidence of
any kind of search engine spamming (attempting to get higher
rankings by unethical means). This is absolutely critical to a
site's survival for the long term.

Keeping that in mind, here's what I tend to do.

Multiple domains - Using multiple domains to the same site has
a tremendous number of advantages. Thus, I tend to follow the
advice given by others: take advantage of permanent redirection.
In other words, set up a redirection (a 301 status code) which
simply tells the browser "this page has moved, proceed to this
page, and the move is permanent. This tells the spider about the
redirection with no possibility of misunderstanding, yet allows
for the multiple domains.

Republished articles - I allow others to republish many of my
articles, and at this time I have records of over 10,000 of
them all over the internet on thousands of web sites. This is
not a problem, as these articles are sent in text format. The
webmaster must then drop this text into his site, which requires
some reformatting and shuffling around. Thus, the finished
articles may have the same text but the formatting is very, very
different. This is a highly respected method of gaining a large
number of incoming links: I give you something (an article,
i.e., content) and you give me something (a link back to my
site).

Mirroring - I haven't needed to do this yet, so I have no advice
as to what to do if a site requires actual, physical multiple
versions of itself. I would tend to just do it overtly (out in
the open) and not worry about it.

Why use multiple domain names? by Richard Lowe

It's quite common for a site to be referenced by more than one
domain name. In fact, most sites are referenced by at least two:
a www version and a non-www version. These are usually set up to
reference the index page on a site and produce the same results
for a searcher.

It could, however, be argued that these are these same domain
names. So the question remains: why would someone want to have
more than one unique domain name for a single site?

Search engines - First, let's take a brief look at search
engines. In the past, it was a very common spamming technique
to purchase dozens, hundreds or in some really gross cases,
thousands of domain names, all referencing exactly the same
site. These were all submitted to the search engines, and many
of them were indexed and blindly added to the results. This is
how many questionable sites used to get top search results very
quickly and inexpensively.

The search engines have apparently caught onto this technique.
At the very least, it has become common knowledge that this kind
of spamming is not tolerated (sometimes common knowledge can be
just as effective a deterrent as actual enforcement). I know
that in the past it was normal to find many sites of different
domain names but identical content in search engine results;
today it's far more rare.

In fact, the top search engine, Google, bases it's ranking
scheme on quality of links. What this translates to is you must
get popular (higher ranking) sites to link to your site to
raise your ranking. Thus, it's a better strategy to get as
many links to a SINGLE domain name than to many different
domain names.

With this in mind, it's now considered best by most search
engine optimization specialists (at least those that know what
they are doing) to only list a single domain with the search
engines, perhaps with the www and non-www version but nothing
else.

Multiple entry points - One technique that I use on my own site
with great success is to have multiple entry points, each it's
own domain name. Let's consider a mythical site in order to
illustrate how this works.

The site is about homemaking, and thus the main domain is
"homemaking.com". Underneath this are sections about sewing,
housecleaning and cooking. You might use "homemaking.com" for
link exchanges and search engine submissions, then create three
additional domains: "sewing.com", "housecleaning.com" and
"cooking.com" (although if you actually managed to purchase
those domain names you could resell them for quite a chunk of
change).

Each of these domains would use a 301 redirect (this informs
any search engine that the page has permanently moved to a new
location) to a specific page on the site.

Those three domains would then be used in different themed
marketing campaigns. You might submit an article to a cooking
site, for instance, which referencing cooking.com. For a
newsletter about cleaning, you would use housecleaning.com. Each
domain name is merely a shortcut to the master domain, but it is
much more targeted than "homemaking.com".

Protection - If you own a business, it's a great idea to think
of some of the derivations of your site name and purchase those
as well. Thus, if you had a company named "xyz", you might also
purchase "xyzsucks" and "ihatexyz" as well. You may as well
direct these to your site, but be sure to include 301 redirects,
as you definitely do not want them in search engine indices.

Typos - Sometimes people misspell things, and domain names are
no exception. Knowing this, you can get some respectable
traffic by purchasing common misspellings for your domain name.
Just remember to use the 301 redirect method so these
misspellings are not listed in the search engines.

Other TLD's (Top Level Domains) - If possible, it's a good idea
to get the.com,.net and.org version of your domain at a
minimum. I tend to get the.us (or whatever country is
appropriate),.info and.biz versions as well. This ensures that
no matter what people type they will get to your domain. Of
course, remember to 301 redirect these domains so they don't get
listed.

For branding purposes, it's essential to get the other TLD's if
you can. If you don't you may be embarrassed to find some
pornographic or casino site has purchased your name with a
different TLD. The white house site (whitehouse.gov) is a
classic example: the.com version has nothing to do with the
white house (if you type this URL, be sure your kids are not
present).

Other TLD's with different content - In a slight alteration of
the above method, I have purchased the additional TLD's, but
made each one slightly different. To use the above housecleaning
example, housecleaning.com might be a page about housecleaning
in general, housecleaning.us might index articles specific to
the United States, and housecleaning.biz may include
information related to housecleaning businesses. Each of these
is just a page or two, and links back to the main
housecleaning.com domain.

If you use this method, be sure it's honest and sincere. Do NOT
do this to spam search engines (in fact, to be perfectly safe,
set your metatags to stop robots from indexing those pages).
These are not intended for search engines - these pages are
intended for focused marketing campaigns.

Regional content - If your site has regional content, you might
purchase specific domain names to focus on that content. For
example, if you had a stamp collection site, you could purchase
"my-stamps.to" for Tonga related stamps, "my-stamps.us" for
United States stamps and so on. You could also keep it simpler
and purchase "my-tonga-stamps.com" for your general site,
"my-english-stamps.com" for your English stamps and so on. These
should also use 301 redirects to keep the specific domain names
from being indexed.

Uses for the.NAME TLD - You might even consider purchase the
.name TLD for your senior managers. Put up simple web sites
about them, with links to your main site. These SHOULD be
indexed in the search engines, as you want people to find them
if they are looking for information about your personnel.

Don't forget email - Remember you can get email on each and
every one of the domains that your purchase. In fact, this is a
great reason to purchase additional domain names - people can
send you email by different means. So be sure to set up the
email for each and every domain to go to a general, "catch-all"
account. It's a good idea, though, to heavily spam-filter this
account as it can collect a huge amount of junk.

Subdomains - This is a great way to get much of the benefit of
the above listed techniques without purchasing additional
domain names. It does require a little more control of your DNS
entries, however, as most ISPs and web hosts will not be
willing to do these kinds of things for you.

In this case, you could define "housekeeping.com" as the
primary domain, then "cleaning.housekeeping.com",
"sewing.housekeeping.com" and "cooking.housekeeping.com" as the
subdomains. You should continue to use 301 redirects to keep the
search engines from indexing these pages.

Renewals - Don't forget to renew all of these domains each year.
At least examine each one when renewal time comes and
consciously decide whether or not you need the domain. Don't
let them expire without your knowledge. Someone else may then
benefit from your hard work.

Other people's mistakes - Sometimes you might find that the
domain you want is not available. In this case, take a look at
the WHOIS record and see when it expires. Set up a reminder for
30 days from this date and every week or so thereafter. On
those days, try and purchase the domain. Quite often,
(especially these days) you may be surprised to find the domain
has become available.

Other TLD systems - Companies such as new.net are offering many
more pseudo-TLDs such as.SHOP and.XXX to the general public. I
would avoid these new systems like the plague. These are at best
bad ideas and at worst scams. They are attempts to supercede the
official internet standard TLD system by companies with
questionable motivations. They all require browser plug-ins or
other customizations to work, and some of them come piggy-backed
with spyware and other malicious applications.

These alternate TLDs do not get indexed in search engines, and
they may conflict with future TLDs added in the official domain
name structure (and thus become useless). On top of that, they
are extremely expensive.

In my opinion, it is critical that the internet domain name
structure remain under the control of a central governing body.
While this body (currently ICANN) is not operating as desired by
the majority, it's still much better being under one umbrella
than splintering this all over the place.

Straight TCP/IP address - I am always surprised to come across
a site which is listed in search engines, ezines and other
promotions as a straight TCP/IP address. This is not only tacky
and a sign of a spammer, it's not very intelligent as well. If
you do this and move your site (changing it's IP), you will lose
all of the traffic that you have so painfully gained.

Conclusions - The point is that owning more than one domain has
many uses, although it is no longer of much value from a search
engine optimization viewpoint. Instead, you can use the other
domain names to fulfill other types of marketing and to attract
people from specific markets to your site.

Why Others Can't Start a Business by Roger Younce

How many times have you heard someone say I want to work for myself
or I want to be self-employed and be free from working for others?
If you are like me and own your own business you hear that a lot.
Now let us be honest. How many times do you get sick of those same
people telling you that and don't do anything about it.
Personally I get tired of hearing it. So why don't others do the
steps to start their own business? There are a variety of reasons
but to me the reason boils down to one reason and that reason is
fear.

So what are they afraid of? Many times it is the fear of change and
failure. Sure, no one wants to fail but that is a chance that all
new business owners face. The fear of failure is a very powerful
emotion. All new business owners not only have to face the chance of
a business not being successful they have to face the fact that many
of their family and friends and watching to see if the business will
be a success. The sad thing is most of the people we hope will
support us in our new venture are sometimes the ones that help
destroy the dream of owning your own business. So what do you do to
eliminate the fear of failure in a new business? You basically seek
out others who have started their business to gain insight into how
they did it.

Most business owners started some where and most likely they
observed other successful business owners to figure out how they
started. Like the old say goes "don't reinvent the
wheel". The key is for new business owners to do their homework.
Yes I said homework. There is work involved in starting, maintaining
and continuing a successful business. Think about it. If it were
easy everyone would be doing it.

Having your own business can be one of the most rewarding aspects of
your life. You get the freedom to your own boss. But with that you
are responsible for the failure and success of the business. There
in no one to blame but yourself.

So the next time some one tells you they want to start their own
business. Do what I do. Tell them that talking the talk gets you no
where. So have to walk the walk and your success is all up to you.

Keep Computer Training Simple... Please! by Roger Younce

Have you ever had the experience of going to a computer training
center and realized how much computer stuff you don't know? I
know when I started in the computer industry in the early 90's I
had trouble just remembering my password after 15 minutes of one-on-
one instruction, much less how the computer actually worked. Let's
face it, no one wakes up one day and says, I am a genius with this
computer stuff. We all had to start some where and for most people,
computers can be very confusing and intimidating. And that is where
the computer trainer comes in.

Oh yeah, the computer trainer. The person that knows everything
about computers and will make learning your new computer skills easy
and quick. Yeah, right, fat chance of that happening. Have you ever
visited a large computer training center and wondered why computers
are so confusing for the client or student? The answer is usually
because of the computer trainer. Most trainers seemed to have
forgotten what it was like when they first tackled the "wonder
box". But over time, they developed magical knowledge that no one
else seemed to have.

So why would someone with so much so-called smarts not want to share
their knowledge with their students? The answer is very simple. It
makes them look smarter. All they have to do is through out a couple
of big fancy-smancy computer words to the class and you are a
genius. That is fine and dandy if a computer trainer wants to
impress Bill Gates, but to the new computer user that just pulled
the computer out of the box or was told by the boss they better
learn that computer stuff, the trainer does the student no good.

So what does a computer trainer need to do? The main thing is to
remember how they felt when they first started using the computer
and how they wanted to pull their hair out when they thought they
would never learn the stuff. How they were afraid to even touch the
computer. Computer trainers fail to realize not all the students
want to become computer geeks and nerds. The everyday user want to
know how to do the simple stuff like how to do a letter, track their
finances with a spreadsheet, develop a slide presentation for their
company or club, or make a simple website. A trainer needs to make
the complicated world of a computer simple, easy and fun for the
client or student. Let's face it, not everyone is or wants to
become a systems administrator or has enough certifications to cover
a wall a Subway. The majority of computer users are beginners that
want to learn how to be more productive at home or in the work
place.

So what does it take for a computer trainer to help students learn
the computer? Try keeping the computer sessions and information
simple and fun. Every trainer has a big responsibility to teach
others what they know so the student can be more productive.
Trainers need to realize you have got to keep the training simple
because if the student can't learn, you do them no good. So keep
it simple…please!!

How to get your business online by Peter Simmons

This article is for all those who have asked "how do I get
my business online?" or have just plain been putting it off
because you dont know where to start or who can help or how
much it will cost.

Why should I put my business online? Well, there are several
reasons why you should.

Firstly, its a great 'connection point' between you and your
customers or partners. They can visit your website at
anytime that suits them to find out more about you, your
products, ordering, or just get more information. Previously
they would have had to physically visit you or use the
telephone and actually speak to you. They can contact you
with questions, complaints, recommendations or just to gauge
how helpful/efficient you are at anytime without speaking to
you or being face-to-face with you. Its another way to deal,
communicate and interact with you. It puts the emphasis on
the customer and their needs and removes the pushy salesman
from the process. This level of anonymity encourages the
customer to get what they want more than ever before or go
somewhere else where they will get it.

Secondly, the Internet enables the customer to shop around
much more easily and cheaply than ever before. It is as easy
to research and buy a product that is sold in another
country as it is to do it for one in your own country and
all for the cost of a local call. Timezones are largely
irrelevant on the Internet.

Thirdly, a website is entirely flexible and can be designed
from scratch specifically for your business and customers,
regardless of the industry you are in and the size of your
business.

Fourth, it is low cost. You can build a website to meet your
budget.

What do you need to do?

Get a web address - often called a domain name/URL. When
someone types in your web address i.e. http://www.youraddress.com
into their Internet enabled computer, they see your website.
Get a name that is easily remembered by your customers.
You'll need to renew it regularly to keep the name.

Get some webspace - often called hosting. A company (the
host) will rent you space on its computer. You store your
website in that space. Your web address will point here so
that when the web address is typed in by the customer, they
will be directed to your website automatically. Make sure
you get a fast and reliable host and therefore your website
is always available and quickly. Read host reviews or ask
people you know to recommend a host.

Research - before doing anything else do some research. Look
at other websites, styles, navigation, content, functions,
etc. What do you like? What dont you like? What do your
customers want? What dont they want? What are your
competitors doing? What arent they doing? Set some clear
objectives for your site. Write them down in order of
priority and work towards them throughout the project.

Content - The most important of all. Whether its text,
images, functions, data or anything else, spend some time
getting it right. It must of course, all meet your clear
objectives.

Design and build your website - you can do this yourself but
I dont recommend it unless you are confident you can do it
well and have enough time to do it. Hire someone to do it
all for you. Make sure you are happy to deal with them and
that they dont just want to design a pretty website for
their portfolio. They should make all the right noises about
how the website will fit into your business and how your
customers will benefit from it. Again, remember your clear
objectives.

Evaluation - check your website meets all your objectives.
Check everything works as it should and is easy to
understand and use by your customers. Do you need to make
any improvements/changes?

Publish - put your new website into your webspace.
Congratulations your business is online!

Finally, review your website initially and regularly
thereafter to make sure it is still meeting your customers
requirements and to see if it can be improved or developed
further.

Good luck and dont forget to let me know how you get on.

No Operating System by Paul Siegel

Imagine a computer with no operating system. If you can do that,
you can imagine a computer that is extremely difficult to hack
into. A computer that is almost immune to viruses. A computer
that rarely crashes.

Too good to be true? No, such a computer has been invented.

Eric Hauk and Eric Uner, 2 former Motorola engineers, invented
this computer. They became so frustrated and annoyed by hack
attacks and by all the time they wasted installing software patches,
that they decided to change their server. Instead of an operating
system, they designed a chip storing a "kernel" of only about
4 Kilobytes of code. They founded Bodacion Technologies Inc.
([http://www.bodacion.com]) to market their computer, which is
called Hydra.

This is essentially the same idea that is used for medical devices
and for game-playing machines like Nintendo. Nintendo rarely
breaks down even though young hackers are constantly trying.

Why is an operating-system-less computer more sturdy than one
with an operating system? What do many viruses do? Once they
get into the system they manage to modify operating-system instructions
to kill the whole system. But if operating-system instructions
do not exist, or rather they exist in hardware, they cannot be
modified. Result: a computer you can depend on.

Of course, this tremendous reliability comes at price. Why does
the operating system have millions of lines of code? To increase
the flexibility of the computer. This is why such computers are
called general purpose computers. Without the O.S., the computer
loses this flexibility and becomes one that is tailored for a
given purpose.

Producing many tailored non-O.S. computers is now worthwhile
in order to achieve greater reliability.

It seems to me that this new technology is better than it appears
to be at first blush. It may even be used to make general purpose
computers more resistant to viruses. If a non-O.S. computer were
used as an input-output device for a conventional O.S. computer,
it could kill viruses before they reach the conventional computer.

I believe that non-O.S. computers have a great future!

Get Millions Of Emotional Traffic To Your Website - LoveClaw Review by John Edwards

Over 65% of all social traffic on the web is driven by Facebook, in large part due to the popularity of its Like Button. In comparison, Google+ drives a tiny amount of traffic. The G+1 button fell flat on its face...
The secret behind why the 'Like' button became so dominant, and the G+1 button failed...?
'Like' connects directly with an EMOTIONAL REACTION, and it's natural for us, as humans, to click on a button that lets us EXPRESS that reaction. We're emotionally driven creatures.
Yet Facebook doesn't seem to realize this... and only seems to have stumbled across it by accident... because they've only just scratched the surface when it comes to the power emotions have on driving traffic.
A new breed of 'Emotional' SEOs understand it fully though, and that's why you'll find their sites occupying the top search results... while 'logical' SEOs are relegated to the back pages.
It all started with an underground software that outperforms Facebook's Like Button by 350%... generating more social traffic in the short term, and even more search traffic in the long term.
If you don't use Emotional SEO in your business yet... I suggest you acquaint yourself as soon as you can.
Be Among The First 'Emotional' SEOs And Rank Higher:
More Than A Social Button...
If you combined the 'clickability' of Facebook's Like Button with the traffic-driving power of Facebook's Share Button... you'd still only have something about 1/3 as powerful as this software.
By compelling more people to click and engage with your site (leveraging the power of emotions), your site is shared far more often through the Social Network... bringing in far more Social Traffic immediately.
That rise in user engagement and social traffic sends massively attractive ranking signals to Google, who then rank your site higher... leading to a bigger rise in free targeted traffic over the long term.
... just by having this emotionally driven software on your site, and giving your users what they need... and emotional outlet.
Discover The World's First Emotional Traffic Software:
Thanks,
P.S.-- If you get on board today, the software's creator will even hold a bonus traffic training webinar, showing you how to get 1,000 new visitors to YOUR site in 7 Days!
P.P.S.-- Google has moved beyond traditional SEO and so should you.
Old-school SEO tactics that aim to please the search engines, instead of human users, are being crushed by Emotional SEOs when competing for Rank #1..
This software is being made available now, but only for a short time, and to a few select groups. This is your chance to take full advantage of 'emotional SEO' and leave your competition in the dark.

Why and How to Wear Men’S Kilt by Raymond Devance

Kilts indicate a Scottish tradition and more important, serve as a national symbol of honor for the history and culture of Scotland. Men wear tartans distinct to their clan or family group; consequently, it is easy to identify them. You could consider kilts as heavy and somewhat uncomfortable to wear but the truth is that they are made as relaxing substitute to trousers. Scottish (and non-Scottish) wear men's kilt for weddings, sports contests and other events.
Lots of people believe that when someone is dressed up in kilt, he is not wearing any undergarment. Fact is that, it is a choice that only the wearer can decide on. But if you look at it intently, it is not suitable to wear it without undergarment. As said before, kilts are put on during sports functions, weddings and even Highland dances. All these involve movement that may cause to reveal what's hiding inside the Highland dress. Women now wear kilts. It has become acceptable since the introduction of the 21st century.
If you wish to try this well-known dress, you should learn to wear men's kilt appropriately:
• Wear the kilt in a way that the pleats are placed at the back. The edges should remain at the right hand side. Ensure that you placed the kilt high on the waist so it extends to the center of the knee.
• Secure the kilt to your waist by fastening the aprons. Bring the leather strap starting from the lower apron to the front of the Scottish kilt and past the opening in the dress's left side. Connect it to the clasp located at the left side of the kilt.
• Holding the upper apron, make an effort to do the opposite. Take it from left to right and fasten it using the leather strap and the buckle located at the right side of the kilt.
• See to it that both the lower and upper aprons are aligned on top of the kilt.
• For formal occasions during the day, match the kilt with a tweed jacket. For casual affairs, partner it with a dress shirt only. On the other hand, for formal activities during nighttime (like weddings), look for a formal jacket to match your kilt. When you can, wear a Prince Charles jacket.
• You might want to complete your look by donning a hat. Look for Glengarry hat to do this.
• Because of the absence of pockets in kilts, you might have a sporran. Through this, it may seem pleasant to bring your wallet and phone on the affair.
• Make sure that you place a kilt pin on the upper apron. People anticipate seeing this every time you don a kilt.
• Do remember your kilt hose as well. Make sure that it complements the hue of your shirt.
If you choose to wear men's kilt, you can either have Scottish blood or you value the country's traditions. Today, not all men who wear kilt are Scottish. Some only wish to make a fashion statement or to be unique, particularly when worn during weddings.
